San Antonio, Texas

"Remixing the Narrative Poem" / AWP Panel
Panel with Jason McCall, Pablo Miguel Martinez, and Heather Wyatt
The narrative poem is often associated with Western epics, which leads to the form being associated with the white male narratives at the core of the Western canon. The lack of space given to minority narrative poets mirrors the lack of space the literary community gives to minority narratives. This is a disservice to both the form and to the poetry community. This panel of minority poets will discuss their approaches to the narrative tradition and how they alter that tradition in their works.

The Refugee Crisis: A Conference -- hosted by the Institute for the Humanities / University of Illinois at Chicago
The world is in the grip of an international refugee crisis. Over 68 million people have been displaced from their homes due to wars, state collapse, persecution, terrorism, poverty, and climate catastrophes. While these numbers have never been greater, many refugee destination countries have responded with restrictionist and anti-immigrant policies. Those seeking refuge are treated as unwelcome intruders and are subject to marginalization, dehumanizing detention, or deportation. The precarious position of refugees is further exacerbated by unstable conditions in host states. This conference gathers scholars, activists, and artists to examine the refugee crisis from a comparative regional perspective. Through panels, storytelling, lectures, and performances, it will interrogate the conditions that have led to the crisis; critically examine existing legal definitions of refugees; analyze responses to the crisis by governments, organizations, activists, and refugees; and explore new strategies for protecting and accommodating precarious populations. Writers for Migrant Justice | CHICAGO
National organizers Christopher Soto, Javier Zamora, Jan-Henry Gray, and Anni Liu are leading a nationwide series of readings protesting violence at the border and raising funds to counter it. The series will be held in 45+ cities and serve as a fundraiser for nonprofit Immigrant Families Together, which posts bail bonds, provides pro bono legal representation, detention assistance, and ongoing support after release to detained migrants. With escalating hostility and violence directed toward migrants, we share the conviction that writers, artists, and culture workers have a responsibility to support vital work that is already underway, and to envision new kinds of collective action as well.
The Chicago reading, hosted by Nabil Vega and Xandria Phillips, will features Tara Betts, mai c. doan, Lindsay Eanet, Tarfia Faizullah, T Clutch Fleischmann, Aricka Foreman, Jennifer Karmin, Maya Marshall, h. melt, Natasha Mijares, Jose-Luis Moctezuma, Faisal Mohyuddin, Nami Mun, Daniela Olszewska, Jacob Saenz, Daniel Suárez, Valerie Wallace, Naomi Washer, and Yarrow Yes Woods, and others. Attendees are encouraged to donate $10-20, or what they can, with all proceeds going to Immigrant Families Together. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. "Diving Into Possibility" (WORKSHOP) with Faisal Mohyuddin
9:30 to 11 am / Saturday, August 17, 2019
To write about ourselves with insight and fidelity—whether in poetry or in prose—can be quite difficult given how fuzzy, fluid, and fleeting memory can be. This task becomes even more challenging when writing about others as we cannot truly know their inner worlds, life experiences, and memories. For those of us who write about family members we never knew, so much of what we do relies on invention, on cobbling together fragments of information to form impressionistic renderings of others’ lives, of diving into the world of possibility. In this workshop, we will examine a variety of short texts (poetry and prose) and investigate imaginative strategies writers use to invent memories—their own as well as those of others. Then we will explore effective ways to present these inventions on the page. (All genres)

How does intergenerational trauma in API immigrant communities shape our relationships to labor, including intimate, familial, and emotional labor? How do we define our worth in the context of political erasure, economic necessity, and inherited patterns of gendered violence? How do we accept and remake our difficult inheritances? Five API poets share original work to explore these questions. MORE INFORMATION: asianartsinitiative.org/event/the-living-deal-api-poets-on-loss-labor-and-love

Northwestern University Summer Writers' Conference (August 15-17, 2019 / Chicago)
